St Croix Rod
St Croix Rod Review
Anglers around the world all generally agree on one thing – a St Croix rod is one of the best. I got my hands on a St Croix rod a little while back – the Avid AVC70MF. Admittedly when I first tried it out I must say I wasn’t a big fan of it. I much prefer a shorter rod but found the more I used it the more and more I liked it! Nowadays I have over seven different St Croix rods in my fishing arsenal!
What exactly do I like about the St Croix rod? Well first of all they are a beautiful rod to cast with. Hard to describe but they have a fantastic casting action that you’d struggle to beat. A St Croix rod is quite light weight which can be a little deceptive at first, but you will, like most, come to love it. It has what I would describe as a medium power and fast action. The seven foot length helps with casting accuracy and distance as well. The St Croix rod is built tough and will last most anglers a good decade of use or more.
One of the downfalls to the St Croix rod is the price – they are expensive! The model I mentioned earlier cost me $177 which is a decent amount of money to spend on a fishing rod. You’ve heard the saying you get what you pay for right? Well apart from the price tag there is no other downside to the St Croix rod in my opinion. Do some research on various fishing forums and you will find the majority of anglers love their St Croix rod.
I have 3 St Croix Avid AVC70MFrods and use them for a wide variety of fishing. All three are permamently rigged as follows: One with a crank bait or spinner bait on a fifteen pound line, another with a jig head worm and twelve pound fluorocarbon line, and finally one with a weightless Senko on a fourteen pound suffix line.
This St Croix Rod has a light tip which makes for easy and accurate casting of lures and worms. The action on the rod is light enough not to break the line with snagged but it has enough strength to set the hook on crank baits, worms and spinners. The beauty of this rod is that it is lightweight which allows you to cast all day long without feeling like your arm is about to fall off – really helpful in tournaments!
The seven foot length helps you take up the line fast whilst setting the hook and provides excellent leverage especially when you find a fishing swimming towards you or when battling a larger fish. The Avid series of fishing rods is probably only considered middle of the range when compared to the rest of the St Croix Rod range. It is not their most expensive rod and not the lightest but will last most anglers many years.
